Nebraska car shipping revolves around one highway. I-80 runs the length of the state through Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte, and it carries a huge share of the country's coast-to-coast truck traffic. That is good news if your car is anywhere near it, because carriers running between Chicago and Denver or the West Coast pass through constantly. Sahara Auto Transport arranges door-to-door auto transport to and from Nebraska, and we can often fit an I-80 pickup into a load that is already moving.
Omaha is the state's biggest market. Union Pacific, Mutual of Omaha and Offutt Air Force Base bring corporate and military relocations, and older neighborhoods like Dundee, Benson and Midtown have tree-lined streets with parked cars on both sides. Lincoln adds University of Nebraska moves and state government jobs, with predictable spikes in May and August. Car shipping in Omaha and Lincoln usually has the shortest wait times in the state.
West of Kearney the state opens up. The Sandhills, the Panhandle around Scottsbluff and small towns along US-30 are farther from steady carrier traffic, so pickups may take an extra day or two, and a meet point at an I-80 exit can speed things along. Weather is the other factor. Winter blizzards and ground blizzards can close I-80 in western Nebraska, and spring brings hail and severe thunderstorms across the plains.

A central Nebraska crossroads on I-80 and US-281 that works well as a meet point for surrounding farm towns.

Blizzards, crosswinds and severe storm season
Winter on the Nebraska plains is less about total snowfall and more about wind. Even a few inches of snow can turn into a ground blizzard that drops visibility to nothing, and I-80 between Kearney and the Wyoming line closes several times in a typical winter. Strong crosswinds also slow trucks year round in the west. A buffer day in your winter plan is smart.
Spring and early summer bring severe thunderstorms, large hail and tornado watches, especially May and June. Hail is the biggest concern for a parked car waiting for pickup. Fall is generally the calmest shipping season, though harvest traffic on rural roads and Husker football weekends in Lincoln can slow local pickups.
Local know-how
Tips for shipping a car in Nebraska
- Register at your county treasurer's office. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection by the county sheriff before Nebraska will issue a title, and most states expect registration within about 30 days of residency, so check the Nebraska DMV for current rules.
- If hail is forecast during your pickup window, keep the car under cover until the truck arrives. Damage that happens before pickup is noted on the inspection report and is not the carrier's responsibility.
- For farm and ranch addresses, an I-80 exit truck stop is often the quickest meet point.
- Check Nebraska 511 when a winter storm moves in; I-80 closures in the western half of the state can hold up deliveries.
- Avoid scheduling Lincoln pickups on Husker home game Saturdays, when traffic around Memorial Stadium backs up for hours.
