Rhode Island car shipping is about making the most of a small state with busy, compact neighborhoods. I-95 runs straight through Providence and Warwick, connecting the state with Boston to the north and Connecticut and New York to the south. Auto transport in Rhode Island is usually quick to schedule because so many carriers pass through on I-95. The challenge is often the last mile, where narrow streets and tight corners make it hard for a large trailer to reach your door.
Providence neighborhoods like College Hill, Federal Hill and Fox Point have steep, narrow streets and limited parking. Newport's historic district has one-way streets, Colonial-era lanes near the waterfront and heavy summer crowds. Many pickups in these areas happen at a nearby open lot, such as a shopping plaza off I-95 or Route 114. Suburbs like Warwick, Cranston and East Greenwich are often easier for door to door service. Sahara Auto Transport arranges the meeting point ahead of time so pickup day goes smoothly.
Demand in Rhode Island comes from students at Brown, RISD, URI, Providence College and Johnson & Wales, from Naval Station Newport, and from retirees heading south for the winter. The Rhode Island to Florida lane is especially busy from October to December and again from March to May. Because the state is so small, a truck loading in Providence can often pick up in Newport or Westerly the same day. Sahara is based in Hollywood, Florida, and we handle this route regularly from both ends.
Pickup and delivery
Where we ship in Rhode Island
Providence
College Hill and Federal Hill streets are steep and narrow, so many pickups move to an open lot near I-95 or I-195.
Warwick
Near T.F. Green Airport and I-95, Warwick is one of the easiest places in the state for door to door service.
Cranston
Residential streets are generally manageable, and quick access to I-95 and RI-37 helps carriers.
Pawtucket and Woonsocket
Older mill city neighborhoods can be tight, so carriers often meet near I-95 or RI-146.
Newport
Historic streets, summer tourists and Naval Station Newport traffic mean many pickups happen outside the downtown core.
South County
Westerly, Narragansett and South Kingstown see summer home moves, with US-1 as the main route.

Nor'easters, hurricane season and summer crowds
Rhode Island winters bring nor'easters that can dump heavy snow and slow I-95. Coastal areas also face Atlantic hurricane season from June to November, though direct hits are uncommon. Carriers will wait out storms for safety, so winter and late summer shipments may need a little flexibility.
Summer is peak tourist season in Newport, Narragansett and Block Island ferry areas, with heavy weekend traffic. Snowbirds ship cars to Florida from October to December and return them from March to May, so booking ahead during those months helps. College move-in and move-out periods in late August and May also add demand around Providence.
Local know-how
Tips for shipping a car in Rhode Island
- In Providence and Newport, plan to meet the driver at a nearby open lot. Narrow streets and parked cars make loading at your door difficult.
- Remove your E-ZPass tag before pickup so it does not register at tolls, including the Newport Pell Bridge.
- New residents should register through the Rhode Island DMV. Most states expect registration within about 30 days of residency, and Rhode Island requires an inspection soon after registration.
- Students shipping to or from Brown, RISD, URI or Providence College should book early for late August and May.
- Summer shipments to Newport or South County are easier on weekdays, when beach traffic is lighter.
